AIS - Automatic Identification System
An AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a safety system that ensures that ships are mutually visible by a broadcast VHF signal that can be received by other ships.
By entering this signal on a chartplotter, the position of all vessels using an AIS system can be seen on the screen. Clicking on the AIS symbol will display the boat's radio call sign, course, boat type, speed and sometimes the destination the vessel is heading.
Two systems AIS
AIS systems are divided into two parts: receive and transmit. For the first part, an AIS transceiver (receiver) is sufficient, with which you can observe other ships and read the data. But your own position cannot be perceived by other ships.
To broadcast your own position, you need an AIS transponder, so that others can also observe and read your position. It goes without saying that a complete system that allows you to see others and allows others to see you ensures the highest security. The average range of AIS is approximately 30 to 40 kilometers from where you receive the signals.
